British born lifestyle photographer Taran Wilkhu has exhibited his work across the globe, launched three books and has recently been appointed as the UK's official photographer to shoot at the most significant global architecture event, The Venice Architecture Biennale 2023. Despite all of the above, he still managed to find time to join us for a cocktail or two..

What’s your favourite room in your house and why?

There’s a sweet spot in the corner of the living room with a vintage Scandi mid-century chair which sits under a stunning porcelain piece of artwork by Ula Saniawa of Unit 89. It overlooks our garden and as we are at the top of the hill has great views across our leafy neighbourhood. Oh and the golden hour light it catches is so powerful - it often feels like a slice of holiday in the home.

If your house was burning down and you were able to pick one piece of furniture to take, what would it be?

My mustard-coloured mid-century leather swivel armchair.

What’s on the top of your wish list for your home?

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone want to be a lifestyle photographer?

Be true to yourself, work on the passion subjects that keep you creative and excited. Personally, the most important part of being a lifestyle photographer is not necessarily my technical ability to shoot, but moreover to set great compositions and collaborate with my clients on set.

What’s your favourite colour and why?

Perhaps yellow, a sense of curiosity, fun and positivity.

What’s your favourite project you’ve shot with Bazaar?

That’s a difficult one, but on balance I think Caroline Terrace with its layered outdoor spaces, I think it would be an ideal family home in the heart of Belgravia. But for a one off show-stopper entertaining space W1 Townhouse in Marylebone would be great fun and architecturally the most interesting.

If you could only pick one item to pass on as a family heirloom what would it be?

The Girard Bird sculpture by Alexander Girard, 1945. I recently received this sculpture which can stand on its feet or tail as a gift from VITRA after documenting their new London showroom in Shoreditch and I hope it will be a much loved piece for years to come.

What’s the favourite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

As a lifestyle photographer, I have had the opportunity to shoot some amazing homes, stunning interiors, architecture and meet great clients on lifestyle shoots over the years. It’s really hard for me to say a single image, but probably one of my favourite commissioned shoots has been an awesome week I spent shooting exciting hidden gems in Japan’s ancient imperial capital Kyoto for House & Garden in 2019.

And of course, your favourite cocktail?

Negroni!!! A few years back one of my New York based clients; Crème Design invited me for cocktails at a new hipster hotel lounge project they had just completed at The Vine, Eventi Kimpton, in Chelsea and I have to say I had the best Negroni ever there!!!
